Strategy 1: Start in the Middle
Click the center of the board first. Modern Minesweeper guarantees your first click is safe, and a center click reveals a larger opening than a corner or edge click. Larger opening means more numbers in view and more logic per move.
Strategy 2: Flag Only What You Know
Beginner players over-flag. The golden rule: place a flag only when the math forces it — a cell with number 1 and exactly one hidden neighbor means that neighbor is a mine. Unnecessary flags are wasted moves and create confusion.
Strategy 3: Master the 1-2 Pattern
The most common pattern: a 1 next to a 2, both touching the same three cells in a row. The mine sits under the cell touching the 1 and 2 together. Learning this single pattern solves the majority of mid-game decisions.
Strategy 4: The 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 Patterns
1-2-1: the mines are under the 1s' outer cells. 1-2-2-1: the mines are under the 2s. These two patterns appear constantly and let you open huge areas safely. Draw them once on paper and you will recognize them forever.
Strategy 5: Use the Chording Shortcut
When a number's mines are all flagged, click both mouse buttons (or long-press on mobile) on that number to open every unmarked neighbor at once. Chording is the single biggest speed technique in Minesweeper.
Strategy 6: Count Remaining Mines
The mine counter tells you how many are left. When the remaining unknown cells equal the remaining mines, flag them all and win. This endgame rule prevents unnecessary risk.
Strategy 7: Accept the 50/50
